What are NDIS support services?

NDIS support services are the everyday, practical and coordination supports that help a person with disability live independently, stay connected and work towards their goals. They may be funded through an individual NDIS plan and delivered by registered or unregistered providers, depending on how the funding is managed and the type of support. Rather than a single service, it is a range you can combine to suit your life.

The main types available in Sydney

Support work (daily living)

Hands-on help at home and out in the community — personal care, daily routines, meal preparation and getting out and about. Under the NDIS this is support work, usually funded from your Core supports budget.

Community participation

Getting involved socially — appointments, shopping, hobbies, sport and groups like our weekly rec group. This is community participation, and it's about connection and confidence.

Psychosocial (mental health) support

For people whose disability arises from a mental health condition, support looks a little different — routine, appointments and gentle community re-connection, held steady by a small, consistent team. That's our psychosocial and mental health support, delivered by NDIS support workers experienced with psychosocial disability.

Support coordination

Help to make sense of your plan and connect with the right providers. A support coordinator turns your funding into supports that actually start, with one named coordinator, suitable provider options presented fairly, and any conflict disclosed in writing. We cover 37 listed Sydney service areas, including dedicated Inner West coordination.

Culturally safe support

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants, Aboriginal-owned, culturally safe support from a team that understands your culture, community and family.

For a deeper breakdown of each type, see our guide to the different types of community support services.

How disability support is funded under the NDIS

The current NDIS guide describes four support budgets. Core can cover everyday assistance and social and community participation; Capacity Building can cover supports that build skills and independence, including support coordination; Capital can cover items such as assistive technology and home modifications; and Recurring is for regular supports paid at set intervals, such as some transport funding. Not every plan includes funding in every budget, and stated funding must be used as described in the plan.

How to choose a disability support provider in Sydney

The service matters, but so does the provider delivering it. A few things worth looking for:

  • Consistency — a small, familiar team and a clear backup plan
  • The right fit — you should meet your worker before supports start
  • Transparency — rosters in advance and no billing surprises
  • Cultural safety — a team that respects your culture and choices
