What are disability support services?

Disability support services are the everyday, practical and coordination supports that help a person with disability live independently, stay connected and work towards their goals. In Sydney, most are funded through the NDIS and delivered by registered providers. Rather than a single service, it's a range you can combine to suit your life.

The main types available in Sydney

Support work (daily living)

Hands-on help at home and out in the community — personal care, daily routines, meal preparation and getting out and about. Under the NDIS this is support work, usually funded from your Core supports budget.

Community participation

Getting involved socially — appointments, shopping, hobbies, sport and groups like our weekly rec group. This is community participation, and it's about connection and confidence.

Support coordination

Help to make sense of your plan and connect with the right providers. A support coordinator turns your funding into supports that actually start, working conflict-free in your interests. In the Inner West we offer dedicated local coordination with one named coordinator.

Culturally safe support

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants, Aboriginal-owned, culturally safe support from a team that understands your culture, community and family.

For a deeper breakdown of each type, see our guide to the different types of community support services.

Capacity Building supports help you build skills and independence, and include support coordination. Capital supports cover equipment and home modifications.
