NDIS plan management · Plain-English guide

Agency-managed NDIS plan:
which providers can you use?

A lot of people don’t know how their NDIS plan is managed — or what it means for choosing providers. This guide explains the three types in plain English, and which providers each one lets you access.

First: what does “plan management” mean?

Every NDIS plan has a management type — it determines who handles the money side of your supports. There are three types. They don’t affect what supports you get; they affect who pays your providers and, importantly, which providers you can choose from.

Most participants aren’t told clearly which type they have. When you get your plan, it’s worth checking — because the rules around providers are very different depending on the answer.

The three NDIS plan-management types

Here’s how each type works and which providers you can access under each one.

Management type Who pays providers Providers you can use
NDIA-managed
(also called “agency-managed”)
The NDIA pays providers directly from your plan. You don’t handle any money or invoices. Registered providers only
Plan-managed A registered plan manager receives your funding and pays invoices on your behalf. Registered or unregistered
Self-managed You receive the funding and pay providers yourself, then keep records for the NDIA. Registered or unregistered

The key rule: If your plan is NDIA-managed (agency-managed), you can only use NDIS-registered providers. The NDIA’s payment system only processes claims from registered providers, so unregistered providers simply cannot be paid under an NDIA-managed plan. This is confirmed by the NDIS on ndis.gov.au.

How to find out which type you have

There are a few quick ways to check:

  • Read your plan document. The management type is listed in the plan itself, usually near the front under your funding summary.
  • Log in to the myplace portal at my.ndis.gov.au. Your plan details are shown there.
  • Ask your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator. They can tell you straight away and explain your options.
  • If you have a plan manager, your plan is plan-managed — that’s the easy one to identify.
  • Call the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110 if you’re not sure.

If you’re unhappy with your current management type, you can request a change at your next plan review or by contacting the NDIA. Speak with your planner or LAC about the process — it’s worth understanding your options before your next review.

If you’re NDIA-managed: what “registered” actually means

Being limited to registered providers isn’t just a bureaucratic restriction — registration means something real. To become registered, a provider must:

  • Pass an audit by an approved quality auditor against the NDIS Practice Standards
  • Ensure all workers pass the NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • Hold relevant qualifications, insurance, and meet ongoing reporting obligations
  • Comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct (all providers must do this, but registered providers also face additional Commission oversight)

In practical terms, registration means the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has independently verified the provider meets minimum safety and quality standards. If something goes wrong, there is a formal complaints and enforcement mechanism. That layer of accountability is one reason many participants and coordinators prefer registered providers even when they have the option to use unregistered ones.

If you’re ever unsure whether a provider is registered, you can search the NDIS Provider Finder at ndis.gov.au.

Tegrity is a registered NDIS provider

Tegrity Services is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (registration number 4050099017, valid until October 2028). We provide support work and support coordination across Sydney — Inner West, City, and Eastern Suburbs.

That means participants with NDIA-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed plans can all access Tegrity. If your plan is agency-managed and a coordinator has told you that limits your choices, Tegrity is a provider you can use.

We’re an Aboriginal-owned team with Aboriginal support workers and coordinators on staff. We’re welcoming to everyone, and culturally safe for First Nations participants. If that matters to you or the person you’re coordinating for, feel free to ask about it when you get in touch.

Common questions about agency-managed NDIS plans

What does agency-managed (NDIA-managed) mean?

Agency-managed and NDIA-managed mean the same thing — the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages your NDIS plan on your behalf. The NDIA pays your providers directly from your plan budget. You don’t receive any money yourself or handle any invoices. This is also the default management type when a plan is approved without another arrangement in place.

Which providers can I use if my plan is NDIA-managed?

If your plan is NDIA-managed (agency-managed), you must use NDIS-registered providers for all supports funded under that plan. Registered providers are approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and must meet government quality and safety standards, hold relevant qualifications, and pass worker screening checks.

Can I use an unregistered provider if my plan is NDIA-managed?

No. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you cannot use unregistered providers for supports covered by that plan. The NDIA’s payment system only allows claims from registered providers. If you want to use an unregistered provider, you would need to switch to plan-managed or self-managed funding — speak with your planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) about your options at your next plan review.

How do I find out how my plan is managed?

Check your NDIS plan document — the management type is listed in the plan itself. You can also log in to the myplace participant portal at my.ndis.gov.au, ask your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator, or call the NDIS on 1800 800 110. If you have a plan manager, your plan is plan-managed.

Is Tegrity a registered NDIS provider?

Yes. Tegrity Services is a registered NDIS provider (registration number 4050099017), registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission until October 2028. This means participants with NDIA-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed plans can all access Tegrity’s support work and support coordination services in Sydney.
