How to request an Aboriginal support worker through your NDIS plan

You can ask for an Aboriginal support worker under any NDIS plan. There's no special funding category and your plan doesn't need special wording — you choose a provider that employs Aboriginal workers, and you ask. Here's exactly how, step by step.

Can you request an Aboriginal support worker? Yes.

The NDIS is built on choice and control: you choose your providers, and you can express preferences about who delivers your supports — including their gender, language and cultural background. Asking for an Aboriginal support worker is a normal, reasonable request, and you don't need anyone's permission to make it.

The practical limit isn't the rules — it's availability. A provider can only match you with an Aboriginal worker if it actually employs Aboriginal workers. That's why the real step is choosing the right provider, not changing your plan.

Step 1 — check which part of your plan pays for support workers

Support workers are funded from your Core budget — usually Assistance with Daily Life or Social and Community Participation. The worker's background makes no difference to the price or the claiming: an Aboriginal support worker is billed exactly the same way as any other support worker, at the same NDIS price limits.

Step 2 — decide what matters most to you

People usually mean one of three things with this request, and it helps to know which is yours:

Any combination is fine to ask for. Many participants want all three; some mainly want a team that understands culture without explaining it.

Step 3 — ask the provider directly

You don't need special language. Words you can use on the phone or in an email, exactly as they are:

“I'd like to request an Aboriginal support worker. Do you have Aboriginal workers on your team, and can I meet them before supports start?”

Step 4 — if you have a support coordinator, put it in writing

Your support coordinator must act on your preferences. One line is enough: “Please shortlist providers with Aboriginal support workers available in my suburb.” A good coordinator will present the options in writing and let you choose — not choose for you. Step 5 — if your current provider can't help

What if no Aboriginal worker is available in your area?

It happens — especially outside the city. If an Aboriginal worker genuinely isn't available, the next best thing is a provider that delivers culturally safe support: you meet your worker before anything starts, you keep a consistent team rather than a rotation of strangers, and the provider can show real relationships with community — not just a policy on a shelf. Cultural safety is judged by how the support feels to you, and you're allowed to keep asking until it feels right.
